Happy Thursday, folks —
This week I want to share the book I recommend to almost anyone who'll listen. It doesn't talk about grand ambitions. It talks about the ten minutes after your morning alarm — and how those choices, too small to notice, end up turning you into a different person by next year. Here's a favorite passage, two quotes, and the book of the week with two lessons worth chewing on.
Passage of the Week
"If you get one percent better each day for one year, you'll end up thirty-seven times better by the time you're done. Conversely, if you get one percent worse each day for one year, you'll decline nearly down to zero."
— James Clear, Atomic Habits
Two Quotes
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.
Great works are performed not by strength but by perseverance.
Book of the Week with 2 Lessons
Atomic Habits
James Clear · 2018 · The self-improvement classic on tiny, repeatable change.
A working operating system for habits — not powered by willpower, but by identity and environment design. Clear's synthesis of thousands of coaching sessions and decades of behavioral science reads easily and lands hard. My number-one book in the "change what you do" category.
1) Don't chase the goal — chase the identity
Most people set habits like "I want to run every day." Clear's advice is to swap the sentence for "I'm a runner." Goals point at outcomes; identity points at who you believe you are — and every tiny action is a vote for the new identity.
I still remember the smoker in the book: when offered a cigarette, he doesn't say "I'm trying to quit" (notice the escape hatch). He says, "No thanks, I'm not a smoker." The identity changed, the behavior followed. Real change isn't reaching a number — it's becoming a different person.
2) Willpower is unreliable; environments are reliable
Clear cites a counter-intuitive finding: people who look "disciplined" aren't stronger-willed — they're better at arranging the room so they almost never need to use willpower at all. Want to read more? Leave the book open on the couch and the phone in a drawer. Want to stop scrolling? Move the charger out of the bedroom to the entryway.
The formula is short: make the cues for good habits obvious, and the cues for bad habits invisible. Don't fight your desires a hundred times a day; design the room once, and be free.
Books I'm Currently Reading
How to Take Smart Notes
Sönke Ahrens · A modern take on Niklas Luhmann's slip-box.
Writing doesn't start from a blank page — it starts from a year of notes. This book lines up with my recent habit of treating every reading as a recording session.
Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi · Re-reading a classic.
When challenge and skill meet in the right ratio, we enter that timeless state of flow. Maybe the oldest, and still best, antidote to the age of distraction.
Reading Tip
Habit Stacking. Attach the new habit to an existing one. The formula: "After [current habit], I will [new habit]." For example: "After I pour my morning coffee, I will read ten pages." The old behavior becomes the cue; the new one rides along. The cost of starting drops close to zero.
"I am excited to keep bringing you new and old books, great insights, and lessons."
